Kind by heart, not faceAn old lady, poor and ugly, used to live on the banks of river Mandakini in Chitrkut Van. She was very generous and kind but she was not liked by the general public because of her ugly face. The locals derogated her by calling her “Kurupa”. She used to sit on the banks of the river, only to curse herself. One day, an old Sage Kalptara, was collecting water from the river and became the target of a hunter, who mistook him for a deer. Watching this from some distance, the old lady ran to help him. She took him to a safe place and gave him water and necessary ointment. But the sage told her about his inevitable end. Impressed by the gesture from an old lady, he blessed her with an afterlife as a fairy with a melodious voice and beautiful face, earning all appreciation. And before he could succumb, he also blessed her with a rebirth as a dancer in the Court of Lord Indra.
Beauty with blessingsFollowing these blessings, Sage Kalptara passed away. The old lady finally received benevolence. After seeking blessings from Sage Kalptara, the old lady died only to take a rebirth as Labnika ,an apsara, in the King's court of Lord Indra. She was the most beautiful woman among all the ladies, with a melodious voice as well. She was the face of the kingdom and had a voice that soothed everyone's ears. But along with beauty and melody, she had a touch of arrogance, which grew with time. She used to make fun of anyone, whom she didn't find worthy of respect.
Arrogance backfiredOne fine day, when she was walking along the banks of river Gangotri, she saw Sage Chandraketu, whom she found worthy of laughter. Not only did she mock the Sage but also disturbed him in his meditation. Agitated by this, Sage Chandraketu gave her a befitting curse. He made a mockery of her arrogance by cursing her human body to mere parrot. Beautiful face and melodious voice vaporized in just a moment.
Aspirations and Freedom: CagedNow Labnika was nothing but a parrot, with no knowledge of her past. From an apsara of King’s court to a mere Parrot, Labnika went through everything. Her life got worse as she was caged by an astrologer. However, she was very fruitful for the astrologer and he kept her in a cell for quite some time. One day, she got a chance to run away when she found the cage open. But on her way up, she was shot by a catapult. The injury was grievous as she lost her control and fell in the hermitage of Sage Bahula.
Freedom of FlightAfter being hit by a catapult, she fell in the hermitage of Sage Bahula. Bahula was a gifted sage. He could easily see the past, present and future events. As a teenager, Sage Bahula used to hear stories of Labnika from her parents. As soon as he saw the injured parrot, he could recognize an apsara in her.
Blessings in DisguiseAlong with the past and present, he could also foresee the evolution of Astro Parrot, over a period of time. Being a great admirer of Labnika, he blessed the parrot with all the divine powers at his disposal. Not only did Astro Parrot escape death, she transformed into a beautiful woman, but with a limitation. The old curse couldn’t change the shape of her face. Sage Bahula knew that even he couldn’t do much about it. But he decided to guide her in the best way possible. He gave an insight to her about Swami Doldal and asked her to search for him. Knowing the fact that she could become what she essentially was (Labnika), Astro left the hermitage with the Sage’s blessings, in search of Swami Doldal.
In search of 'Hope'Astro took the path, shown by Sage Bahula. She continued her journey, not just to find a person named Swami Doldal but also a person who could be the answer to her problem. For the first time, she was neither arrogant nor in troubled, she had hope.
Partners in CrimeDays later, she found Swami Doldal along with his partner in crime, Labota. Since then she has lived together with swami ji and Labota, and has spent centuries with them. Things have changed around them but there is no love lost between Labota and Astro. However, Astro is still looking to attain the ‘Labnika’ face.
